What both Time and Bloomberg Businessweek focus on are not how Swift is dealing about her break-ups or how her style is easy to re-create on a budget. Rather, the 24-year-old singer has received the kind of treatment so few women in the music industry are ever dealt: respect. Time titled their piece “The Power of Taylor Swift” while Bloomberg Businessweek opted for “Taylor Swift Is The Music Industry.”

It didn’t take long before the Internet pointed out that the image of Swift on both is nearly identical, but that’s not what actually matters about the covers. What does matter is the fact that Swift appears on both covers with her face taking up the entire real estate. Her gaze is forward, directed right at the reader. It is the sort of cover that is more often reserved for men because it is a powerful and assertive image. More often than not, women are depicted on the covers of magazines showing off their sexy bodies, desirable fashion, and/or they’re very photoshopped, and look completely non-threatening. Take a close look the next time you’re a the magazine aisle at the grocery store and you might notice just how rarely women are looking directly at you without being completely sexualized.

At the start of the year I did Stockholm, Pennsylvania. It’s a tiny film written and directed by Nikole Beckwith. It was her first time directing and we did it in 19 days, on a million dollar budget. I’d never done anything like that before. It was interesting to see how somebody, especially a new filmmaker, could handle that kind of pressure. Stockholm is about a girl called Leia who’s in her early twenties. At the start she’s rescued, after seven years, from her kidnapper, who raised her in a basement. She has never seen the light of day until she is handed back to her biological parents in the second scene, but she doesn’t know these people. It’s mainly about the relationship between Leia and her mother, and how she doesn’t see why it’s wrong to be completely in love (in a childlike way) with her kidnapper, despite what he did. Her mother, played by Cynthia Nixon, spirals out of control, imprisoning Leia in a different way. Both films are centred on women. Brooklyn is based on a book by Colm Tóibín. It’s set in the 1950s and follows Eilis Lacey’s journey to New York to start a new life. It follows immigrants and Irish people in general, who made that trip, showing its difficulties, wonders and heart-breaks. I’ve never been so affected by a film before. The screenplay was written by Nick Hornby; it’s a gorgeous and very simple take on life.

Is there anyone whose going to the London shows for Reputation tour? I’m going for the cheapest seats possible, with one day slightly less cheap. I’m having little trouble figuring out how best to do it and save as much money as possible. I figured out that taking the train is best mode of travel and that will be £22 booking in advance. It’s going to be belated birthday present to myself. Thanks for any help and advice.

I’m an english major. I know next to nothing about science, engineering, and astronomy. Sure, I think space is cool. I’m very supportive of NASA’s efforts. I might even have an opinion on where we should send the next shuttle or how much money we should spend on space travel. 

But at the end of the day, my opinion on the matter is not valuable. I’m not going to enter into a discussion about the next shuttle launch with a bunch of trained scientists and expect them to take me seriously. 

Sometimes, your opinion is not valuable. Sometimes, you aren’t qualified to enter a discussion.

And, lets be honest, straight people’s opinions are valued in literally every other situation. Hell, straight people get more awards for lgbt “activism” than queer people themselves.

If you really can’t accept that sometimes your voice isn’t the most important in the room, you might need to get over yourself.

Taylor literally cannot win. She is dragged for not publicly supporting Kesha, then she does privately and is dragged for making it about her or how a tweet would’ve shown more support, rather than money to actually help Kesha pay for legal representation since her label has billions of dollars to use against her. She’s attention seeking if she does and a bitch if she doesn’t. People are impossible. Stop using Kesha’s sexual assault to play America’s Next Top Feminist!!!
